Rick Scott Says Halloween Candy Has Been Infiltrated By Drug Traffickers

U.S. Senator Rick Scott posted a video this morning on Halloween on the platform X that warns parents to be careful this halloween. He explains that fentanyl looking like candy has been brought across the border by drug traffickers and cartels and that it can be handed out as normal candy to children.

While this is a very serious thing to consider for your children on Halloween, there has actually been zero cases of any fentanyl candy lookalikes in the U.S. Drug policy experts have even said that there should be no worry for your children.

While there is nothing wrong about Senator Scott warning parents about the safety of their children, this video can be seen as a slight form of fear mongering. He framed this story around not just drugs in general, but drug trafficking from cartels.

Things start to click as to why he would do that as they align with his views on border policies! So it makes sense as to why he frames this story that way to social media.

  1. Hi Max, even though Senator Scott's warning is based on concern, it doesn't seem to be backed up by evidence, since no cases of fentanyl-laced candies have been recorded. This warning may fit with how he feels about border policies, but without proof, it could be seen as spreading fear. To avoid unnecessary panic and bias, it's important that public warnings are fair and based on facts.

  2. Hi Max and Alex, I can agree that there is not a whole of evidence-based information that was presented by Senator Scott, however, I do think that he was correct in warning people. Though his presentation seemed more aligned with his own personal biases.

America has a serious fentanyl crisis right now, and it's always better to be safe than sorry. That being said, I do not think someone who trafficks drugs across a border is going to waste them on kids on Halloween, I think the concern would be better directed at teens/young adults heading to Halloween parties.
