TikTok Video Fools Thousands as it Lies About U.S. Soldiers Deploying to Israel
We have to remind ourselves that one of the biggest pushers of lies aren't just politicians and media outlets, but our fellow U.S. citizens! Which is where social media platforms like Instagram, X, and TikTok come into play.
The focus of this article is a video posted on TikTok that shows U.S. soldiers gearing up for deployment. Along with this video is the caption, "Thousands of US Troops make their way to Israel."
This would be a very alarming thing for you to see pop up on your feed. And it very much was for the just under 300 thousand people who viewed this video. The comment section with over 2,500 comments also show many of the peoples fear of the situation.
One commenter says, "Keeping all in prayers, coming from a mom of a marine!"
Another states, "It's crazy... how are we going to be safe if they're sending them to their war. We need them to be here to watch our country."
Of course with some further research, these commenters can breath a sigh of relief as this video is not true.
The footage is from as far back in 2018! There have been zero boots on the ground soldiers to aid the battle in Israel. But all it took for people to think this was some old footage and a false caption.
This should once again be a reminder of how powerful social media is to our politics! Now these days anyone with an iphone and a social media account can spread a falsehood that completely changes ones perspective of an issue. The original poster of this clip could have framed it in a way that makes a certain political party look bad.

Misinformation is a huge issue in social media and news. So many people have become accustomed to receiving their news from social media that they often just trust what they see. If there is a video or photo of it, anyone can make a caption claiming it is something it is not, and like your example here hundreds of thousands will believe it. This is a huge influence for creating my own blog that focuses on misinformation, bias, and understanding how to pick out real information. Your article here has me wondering if my next posts should focus a bit more on social media bias and misinformation rather than news outlets.
